AI upscaling: what it recovers and what it invents
How AI upscaling differs from resizing, what it can genuinely restore, and when to regenerate at 2K instead.

Upscaling means making a picture bigger without it turning to mush. Ordinary resizing stretches the pixels you have and the result is soft, because there is no extra information in the file to stretch. An AI upscaler does something different: it predicts the detail a larger version of that picture would plausibly contain, and draws it.
Predicted is not recovered
This distinction decides whether upscaling is the right tool. The new detail is invented — reasonable, consistent with the rest of the frame, and not a record of what was actually there. On texture, foliage, fabric and stone that is invisible and delightful. On a face, a licence plate or small print it is a fabrication, and treating it as evidence is a mistake people make in public regularly.

The cheaper route: generate large in the first place
If the image does not exist yet, do not plan to enlarge it later. Choose 2K before generating and you get a picture built at that size rather than one grown into it — and here that costs exactly the same single credit as 1K. Same picture, more pixels, no invention.
Choose 2K when the image will be printed, cropped into afterwards, or shown very large. For a web page, a post or an email, 1K is the right default and the smaller file loads faster.
What to do with a small photo you already have
Upload it and edit rather than enlarge blindly: repair the damaged parts, replace the background, clean the noise, and let the result render at 2K. That fixes what is actually wrong with an old picture, which is rarely just its size — it is grain, colour cast, damage and a dull background.
