Free vs paid AI image generators: what actually changes

The real differences behind the price, written without marketing language.

The difference between free and paid tiers is rarely image quality, and reading it as a quality question leads people to the wrong tool. What actually changes is volume, privacy, batch size and whether the thing can sit inside your own product.

What usually differs

Typically freeTypically paid
VolumeA small starting allowanceA monthly allowance that renews
PrivacyResults are publicResults are private by default
Batch sizeOne image at a timeSeveral variants per run
AutomationManual use onlyAPI access

Here specifically: a free account gets a starting allowance of credits at sign-up, one credit makes one image, and everything generated on the free plan is published to Explore — stated plainly, because it is the deal. A paid plan adds a monthly credit allowance, private-by-default images and batches of up to four.

How to decide

Count the images you actually make in a month. If it is a handful, free is the correct answer and paying for capacity you will not use is not a saving. If it is dozens, the question becomes privacy and batch size rather than price: private results matter for client work, and four variants per run changes how you explore an idea.

The other trigger is automation. If images need to appear without a person at a keyboard — a catalogue, a template, a feature inside your own product — that is what the API and the embeddable widget are for, and both need a paid account behind them.

What does not differ

The model, the styles, the aspect ratios and the editing tools are the same on both tiers, and a 2K image costs exactly what a 1K image costs. Nothing about the picture itself is held back — see pricing for the whole story in one screen.
